Hannah Melville

Volcanos are crucibles smelting experiences, bold lovers are painted on Grecian urns, amphibious females emerge from the foliage… it is said that symbolism appeals to the intellect and imagery to the senses – with the art of Hannah Melville both are used to introduce personal and universal narrative.

Abundant classical references and visions of Arcadia all coalesce to create Melville’s imagined natural worlds. Reveling in nature, blooms and berries, female figures and their familiars, sometimes slightly feral or pollen covered, juicy, squelchy, blooming and magic, transform and transmute with an archaic smile. This ability to create other realms was recently demonstrated in Melville’s recent Black Asterisk exhibition Fantastic Fields (September 2018).

Originally from Devonport in Tāmaki Makaurau, Melville studied at Elam and COFA, showing with Anna Bibby Gallery and Mori Gallery Sydney. Having only recently returned after living in London, Sydney and for the last 15 years in the south of France, Melville’s show at Auckland Art Fair 2019 is a celebratory welcome home from her extended personal odyssey.
