Jon Tootill is of Ngai Tahu, Irish and English descent. He has been regularly exhibiting in New Zealand since 1978 and painting full-time since 1998. In 1988, he won the Ida Eise Painting Award. Tootill’s paintings are strongly influenced by his Maori heritage, contextualised within modern urban frameworks. He explores themes of identity, culture and belonging and the place of art in defining these. Recently the Franklin Art Centre exhibited selected works from the last 14 years in Jon Tootill: Survey 2000 – 2014. In 2015 an important public art commission for Otara Town Centre was opened. He is represented by Bath Street Gallery.
