Jonny Niesche

Jonny Niesche (b.1972, Sydney) has long worked with the intrinsic relationship between colour, form and light to produce formal and optically charged works that challenge our perception of space. Employing a range of materials that each perform differently with light, Niesche’s beguiling colour fields and sculptures offer shifting, sensory experiences conducted by subtle acts of reflection, transparency and movement. His conceptual adaptations of contemporary painting are rendered as precise geometric forms with carefully orchestrated, elusive surface qualities. Simultaneously referencing the cheerful dissonance of psychedelia and the formal concerns of high modernism, Niesche’s seductive and curious works invite a phenomenological, active response; a mutual exchange between object and spectator. Jonny Niesche has exhibited nationally and internationally in major institutions. Notable group exhibitions include: Superposition of three types at Artspace, Sydney 2017; Shut up and Paint at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne 2016; Painting. More Painting at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Melbourne 2016. His work is held in many public and private collections internationally, including the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Hobart; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; and the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne.
