Sally Gabori – Memories of Place
Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori (c. 1924–2015) remains one of the leading contemporary Australian aboriginal painters of her generation. Sally Gabori’s paintings, all landscapes of her beloved Bentinck Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, are remarkable for their raw energy and sensual colour. In this talk, Scott Lawrie, Director of The Vivian takes us through the monumental Dibirdibi Country, 2011 – shown here in New Zealand for the very first time as an Auckland Art Fair exclusive – and explains the fascinating context and inspiration behind this work.
