Starting this Friday, and running for 10 days, the inaugural Art Week Auckland offers up 80 exhibitions and events, in 40 galleries and venues, across 3 neighbourhoods.
Art Week is a great idea and, like most good ideas, we’ve pinched it from someone else (in this case the Australians), adapted it to local conditions, and made it our own.
The event is brought to you by the NZ Contemporary Art Trust and Heart of the City. Behind the wheel, you’ll find the usual suspects: myself and Deborah White, who decided 5 years ago that it was time for NZ to have it’s own art fair (what were we thinking?) and Michele Dodds, an enthusiastic supporter of art in the BIG Little City. We’re also delighted to introduce a foxy new recruit to the cause, our programme coordinator Cleo Barnett.
Art Week and the Auckland Art Fair are complementary events with a single shared purpose: to grow the visual arts audience through discovery and discussion.
The biennial art fair acts a magnet that pulls people into the art world, focussing attention on contemporary art in once concentrated space; in turn, Art Week pushes people back out in to the art community – where it all starts.
The Artweek calendar is jam-packed with free events including family and children’s activities, artist talks, guided walks of galleries and more. Check out the full programme on the website www.artweek.co.nz
