Ask any successful performer, entrepreneur or sportsperson and they will tell you: Timing is everything. The art world is no different.
Our biennial fair was scheduled for August 2015, but after careful consideration and discussion, we decided that deferring the event would secure us a better position on the international arts calendar.
The next Auckland Art Fair is now set to take place in May 2016.
The May 2016 dates will sync Auckland Art Fair with a circuit of events in the Asia Pacific region including annual fairs in Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing, without conflicting with biennial fairs in Melbourne and Sydney.
With such a proliferation of events in the region, a boutique fair like Auckland has to fit into the schedule if we are going to continue to attract the quality galleries and artists that have made the event such a success so far.
While everyone is disappointed not to be getting together on Auckland’s waterfront in 2015, our participating galleries and event partners are very supportive of the shift, recognising that it will secure a stronger, more international fair in the long run.
The deferment means that our local audience will have to wait a little longer to see presentations by Australasia’s leading contemporary galleries and works by the region’s most sought after artists, but the Auckland Art Fair board has an interim year event in development, the details of which will be released later this year.
In the meantime, on behalf of my fellow board members, thank-you for your taking part in the show so far. We look forward to seeing you in the next act!
And fellow Auckland Art Fair trustees: Richard Scoular (Chair), Hilary Lewis, Gary Langsford, Dayle Mace, David Ross, Dale Spencer and Deborah White.

A couple of the lovely comments we’ve received so far (and we would love to hear from you)
“Art fairs are increasingly central to our program. Placing work by New Zealand artists in an international context like Art Basel (Hong Kong) and conversely, bringing internationally renown artists to Auckland, is vital to creating and maintaining important dialogues. Auckland Art Fair has established a distinctive position in Australasia. The fair is responsive to what the audience is seeking and what the galleries need, and the result is a platform that is both sophisticated and approachable.”
Andrew Jensen (Jensen Gallery Sydney/Auckland)
“ANZ Private is fully supportive of the move which will secure the event’s position on the international art stage. The Auckland Art Fair aligns closely with our values and delivers a memorable experience both for our clients and the public. We look forward to the next fair with great anticipation.”
