Lonnie Hutchinson is a leading Māori and Pacific artist whose work spans sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, film, and performance. Drawing inspiration from indigenous histories, women’s histories, and craft practices, Hutchinson uses the language of contemporary art to articulate a Polynesian worldview, telling the stories of her ancestors, that reflect her Samoan, Māori (Ngāi Tahu), Scottish, and English heritage.

Moemoeā: A Model for Dreaming features kōwhawhai pattern and allows the viewer to consider the ancestral stories it holds as it casts moving shadows. Hutchinson’s panels recalls the corrugated-iron roofs of settler-style homes across Aotearoa New Zealand, while its pattern offers a counter rhythm.
