Welcome, art enthusiasts! Join our panel of art aficionados for a game show-style quiz. Explore a myriad of topics related to art and collecting. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn things they don’t teach you in art history and elevate your understanding of the captivating world of art! Plus, there’s a chance to win spot prizes.

Featured on the panel are Sue Gardiner, Chair Chartwell Charitable Trust and Co-Director of the Chartwell Collection; Tim Melville, Director of Tim Melville Gallery; and Ruth Buchanan, Kaitohu Director. The event will be hosted by Charles Ninow, an auctioneer, dealer, and valuer of New Zealand art.

This talk is presented as part of Let’s Talk Art, the talks programme at the 2024 Aotearoa Art Fair, held from 18 – 21 April at the Viaduct Events Centre. To attend this talk, purchase a ticket to the Fair.

SPEAKERS

CHARLES NINOW

Charles Ninow is a pre-eminent auctioneer, dealer, valuer, and promoter of fine art in Aotearoa. He has achieved record prices for many of New Zealand’s most significant artists, including Colin McCahon, Bill Hammond, Tony Fomison, Grahame Sydney, Louise Henderson, Adele Younghusband, Liz Maw and Seraphine Pick.

RUTH BUCHANAN

Ruth Buchanan is an artist of Pākehā, Te Atiawa, and Taranaki who runs her studio out of Tāmaki Makaurau and Berlin. She is currently Kaitohu Director Artspace Aotearoa, a public contemporary art gallery founded in 1987 by artists and artsworkers. Ruth is showing at the 2024 Aotearoa Art Fair with Coastal Signs.

SUE GARDINER

Sue Gardiner (MNZM) is a passionate advocate of the arts and a Trustee of the Chartwell Trust, a New Zealand charitable philanthropic trust, which supports the visual arts and knowledge about the creative process. Sue is also co-Director of the Chartwell Collection, a major public collection of New Zealand and Australian contemporary art held on long-term loan at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Sue is a well-known advocate for arts access and education, engagement, philanthropy, fundraising, arts governance, and promoting art through national and international art tours.

TIM MELVILLE

Tim Melville (Te Arawa, Ngāti Whakaue, Te Atiawa) opened his Auckland gallery in 2007. He has a special interest in championing indigenous artists’ work and his programme supports a roster of emerging, mid-career and senior artists from New Zealand, the Pacific and Australia. He is also a Trustee of the Wairau Māori Art Gallery at the Hundertwasser Art Centre in Whangārei. Tim wonders what he has let himself in for by agreeing to take part in the Aotearoa Art Fair Quiz and hopes he will not be exposed as a fraud.
