Below is a sample four-day itinerary which includes stops at the Auckland Waterfront, America’s Cup team bases, Waiheke Island, Great Barrier Island, and Arid Island.

DAY ONE | Auckland and Waiheke Island

Embark in Auckland, the City of Sails, in the morning with breakfast and coffee on board.

Tour the Auckland waterfront by sea and visit the America’s Cup team bases. You might even see them out on the water training for the big event.

Cruise over to Waiheke Island, and tuck into a quiet bay for lunch. Spend the afternoon at your leisure; wine tasting, exploring, sun bathing, reading or visit the world renowned Connells Bay Sculpture Park in an idyllic bay at the south end of Waiheke. Later watch the sun set over the harbour as you settle into your evening on board.

DAY TWO | Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island

Early sunrise cruise to Aotea / Great Barrier Island. Choose to stay in bed and wake up slowly with coffee delivered or pop your head above deck to join your captain on the flybridge navigating your group to the beautiful island of Great Barrier.

The crew can guide you to various nature hikes in the area, to the crystal clear waterfalls and swimming holes. Pods of dolphins are often spotted in the many bays and coves of this beautiful natural harbour. If you’re lucky enough you might just get to swim with them too. Ask the crew to take you free diving for crayfish and scallops. Come back to the boat for a lunch of local seafood prepared by your chef. Spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring the west coast harbours of the island. Watch the sunset over Auckland in the distance. The vessel will depart after dark as you finish your dessert and turn in for the evening. Pull out a board game or get stuck into one of the 500 movies in the media room while your captain and vessel relocate you to your next anchorage ready to explore an entirely new land and sea- scape the following day.

DAY THREE | Rakitu / Arid Island

Wake up to the sunrise over the vast Pacific Ocean on the eastern side of Great Barrier. Tucked behind Rakitu Island “the lonely island” you are protected from any potential ocean swell coming in. Exploring the thriving kelp forests with a local scuba diving instructor and guide can be arranged here.

This side of the island boasts pristine surf beaches including the idyllic Medlands beach – a horseshoe shaped cove often with perfect long rolling beach breaks. Great for beginner, advanced sufers and swimmers alike. Enjoy the day exploring the Eastern coast of Great Barrier and Rakitu Island before making the overnight passage back to Auckland.

DAY FOUR | Auckland or Waiheke Island

An overnight voyage from Great Barrier to Auckland city sees you arriving early in the morning for disembarkation at your leisure.

Option to disembark at Waiheke Island where you can continue exploring the island or cruise back to Auckland Viaduct marina in the centre of New Zealands biggest city.

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island, located just forty minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland, is an enchanting blend of beautiful beaches, lush native bush and outstanding wineries and restaurants.

Connell’s Bay Sculpture Park offers an outstanding art experience on the island, art and nature are combined as site-specific commissioned sculptures sit amongst sweeps of native trees and plants in this remote coastal area.

Southern Crossings are offering one or two night stays on Waiheke, either with the “sand between your toes” luxury of The Boatshed, or at Marino Ridge, set discreetly in three and a half acres of natural beauty with sweeping sea views.

Book your stay with Southern Crossings and receive a personalised itinerary for visiting the sculpture park and some of the islands best vineyards.

Matakana

Matakana is a relatively “undiscovered” part of Auckland’s eastern coastline, looking out to Kawau Island and encompassing the fabulously uncrowded surf beaches of Tawharanui Regional Park.

It is also home to Brick Bay Sculpture Trail and Vineyard, showcasing contemporary sculpture in a remarkable landscape framed by towering native trees and majestic palms, abundant birdlife and green pastures all overlooking the celebrated Brick Bay Vineyard.

While you are in the region, go snorkelling at Goat Island Marine Reserve, take in beautiful Pakiri beach by horseback, or cruise over to Kawau Island for great beaches and bird watching.

Southern Crossings are offering two or one night stays at Takatu Vineyard and Lodge in the heart of Matakana, including optional car hire from Auckland, before or after the Art Fair.
