Gordon Walters (1919-1995) is known for his paintings of the koru, a curved form from Maori moko and rafter patterns. From 1956 until his death, he explored the koru within the context of international modernism, transforming its organic shape into strict geometry. In 2023, Dr. Francis Pound published a comprehensive monograph on Walters’ work. In 2014, Starkwhite and the Walters Estate exhibited his koru paintings at Art Basel Hong Kong, alongside his important early work, Chrysanthemum (1944).
Walters is a respected figure in New Zealand art, with a career spanning four decades. His work was showcased in major exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Auckland Art Gallery in 1983 and Parallel Lines in 1994. He is featured in key public collections, and his legacy is honored through the bi-annual Walters Prize at the Auckland Art Gallery.
