Come and be part of an engaging Talanoa about the vaka of the wider Moana region with esteemed carver and artist Sully Paea. Through this insightful conversation, Sully will share his deep knowledge of vaka traditions, their significance, and their place within our communities.

Sully will share and talk about the vaka models he has made, offering insights into their design, meaning, and connection to the wider Moana region.

Sully Paea (MNZM) is a Niuean-born veteran youth worker with over 45 years of experience and a dedicated artist based in Otara, Tāmaki Makaurau. Sully discovered his passion for carving later in life, recognising its profound impact on reconnecting youth with their cultural roots. What began as a hobby has evolved into a deeply rooted expression of life and heritage. For the past 15 years, Sully has been on a journey back to his homeland of Niue, where he has rekindled the carving traditions he remembered from childhood stories told by the island’s elders. This experience ignited his passion for carving and preserving Pasifika history. He recently completed a pacific art research period in Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and featured his extended collection in an Exhibition at Fresh Gallery 2024.

All are welcome come, listen, and learn from a master carver and artist.
