A conversation between Tim Melville and Ngāti Kahungunu artist Nephi Tupaea.
As a long-standing member of the artist collective ‘Pacific Sisters’ Tupaea is renowned for her body adornment, spoken word and costume design. It is less well known that she is also a painter whose practice entails cloaking the background structures of old master European paintings in Kōwhaiwhai to assert cultural sovereignty and tino rangatiratanga.
