In this insightful session, hear from seasoned collectors and industry experts as they share their experiences, tips, and strategies for building a meaningful photography collection. From identifying emerging talent to understanding editions and value, this talk will equip you with the knowledge to start or refine your collection with confidence.

David Alsop established {Suite} in 2007 in Wellington after having lived in the Netherlands for nearly five years. In 2020, {Suite} became the first gallery in 25 years to establish a gallery in both Auckland and Wellington. He works between {Suite} Ponsonby and {Suite} Wellington and is actively involved in the day-to-day running of the gallery. 

Hamish Coney is a writer and independent arts advisor with a deep passion for art. He has been collecting art magazines, books, and artwork since childhood, reflecting his lifelong dedication to the arts. As the owner of Art+Object from 2007 to 2018, Hamish has been deeply involved in the art world, curating and advising on significant collections. His writing is considered a pure expression of his thoughts and passion, blending his expertise and love for the arts seamlessly.

Sally Dan-Cuthbert has worked in the art and design industry for over 35 years as an esteemed advisor, curator, art specialist, and, most recently, launching Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert in August 2019. Dan-Cuthbert has built up important relationships with artists, curators, galleries and collectors, which has kept her at the top of her profession. She was previously employed by Christie’s, Australia and continues to operate as an industry-respected independent art advisor.Dan-Cuthbert works closely with artists, designers, architects and collectors to facilitate meaningful exchanges and thoughtful collecting practices. Sally Dan-Cuthbert has worked on advisory committees and with not-for-profit arts organisations. She is a longstanding benefactor of public galleries, including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney); Art Gallery of NSW (Sydney); Art Gallery of South Australia and National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne), as well as the Adelaide Biennial and the Biennale of Sydney.

Grant Kerr is a passionate supporter and collector of New Zealand art, with a notable collection of photographs, including iconic works by Peter Peryer. His interest in collecting began as a child, starting with stamps and evolving into prints and paintings during his student years at the University of Otago. Over decades, Kerr has built one of New Zealand’s finest private photography collections. His current exhibition, They Were Young Once, showcases key works from his collection, reflecting his deep appreciation for contemporary New Zealand photography.
